Heel Spurs

A bony growth that can cause significant heel pain.

Heel spurs are calcium deposits that form on the underside of the heel bone. They develop gradually over months and are often associated with plantar fasciitis. Not all heel spurs cause pain — treatment focuses on addressing the underlying inflammation.

Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing Heel Spurs

  • Sharp heel pain especially with first steps
  • Chronic aching in the heel
  • Pain that worsens after prolonged standing
  • Tenderness when pressing on the heel
  • Visible or palpable bump on the heel
Treatment Approach

Dr. Husein's philosophy

80% of cases resolve with conservative care

Conservative Care First (Preferred)

  • Stretching exercises for plantar fascia and calf
  • Custom orthotics to redistribute pressure
  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Corticosteroid injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Ice therapy and rest
  • Shoe modifications

Surgical Consideration (Last Resort)

Surgery is always the last resort.
Surgery is considered only after 9-12 months of failed conservative treatment. Heel spur removal (calcaneal exostectomy) involves removing the bony growth. Dr. Husein exhausts all non-surgical options first.
