Fat Pad Atrophy

The cushion under your heel wears away with age.

Fat pad atrophy refers to the thinning and deterioration of the natural cushioning fat pads beneath the heel and ball of the foot. Common in older adults and people who have received multiple cortisone injections, it causes significant pain with weight-bearing.

Treatment Approach

Dr. Husein's philosophy

80% of cases resolve with conservative care

Conservative Care First (Preferred)

  • Extra-cushioned shoes and insoles
  • Silicone heel cups and padding
  • Custom orthotics
  • Activity modification
  • Weight management

Surgical Consideration (Last Resort)

Surgery is always the last resort.
Autologous fat grafting (injecting fat from another body site into the heel pad) is an emerging treatment. Dr. Husein evaluates each case individually.
