Fifth Metatarsal Fracture

One of the most common foot fractures -- location determines treatment.

The fifth metatarsal is the long bone on the outer side of the foot. Fractures here are very common and include avulsion fractures (from ankle sprains), Jones fractures (at a specific high-risk zone), and shaft fractures. Treatment varies significantly by location.

Signs and Symptoms

Recognizing Fifth Metatarsal Fracture

  • Pain on the outer side of the foot after injury
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Tenderness when touching the outer foot
  • Pain that worsens with activity
Treatment Approach

Dr. Husein's philosophy

80% of cases resolve with conservative care

Conservative Care First (Preferred)

  • Immobilization with a boot or cast
  • Non-weight bearing for Jones fractures
  • Protected weight bearing for avulsion fractures
  • Bone stimulator therapy
  • Physical therapy after healing

Surgical Consideration (Last Resort)

Surgery is always the last resort.
Jones fractures in athletes and high-risk locations often require surgical fixation with an intramedullary screw due to high non-union rates with conservative care alone.
